Nelimarkka Museum

Located in Alajärvi, the Nelimarkka Museum opened to the public in 1965. Commissioned by artist and professor Eero Nelimarkka (1891–1977) and designed by his friend, architect Hilding Ekelund, the museum building is currently owned by the town of Alajärvi.

The foundation established by Eero Nelimarkka still contributes significantly to the operations of the museum. In addition to presenting art by Eero Nelimarkka and conducting research, the museum is also tasked with promoting Ostrobothnian art.

The Nelimarkka Museum arranges exhibitions, workshops and events for adults and children. Since the mid-1980s, the museum has run an international art residency programme.

Visitors can savour coffee and cakes at the museum’s light and airy Café de Nelimarkka during the summer months or buy presents and souvenirs in the museum shop, which is open all year round. You can also book a customised guided tour or workshop for your group.

Villa Nelimarkka, located near the museum, with its Nelimarkka art residency programme, is an integral part of the museum’s operations. In addition, the museum manages Villa Väinölä in the centre of Alajärvi, designed by Alvar Aalto.
