Alajärvi is known for its connections to architect Alvar Aalto, artist Eero Nelimarkka and Finnish baseball. This route takes you to see the memorials and historical buildings located in the centre of Alajärvi, which is often called the town of eleven Aaltos. The centre boasts several buildings and monuments designed by Aalto, which form an architectural and cultural environment that is significant not only at a local or national level but also internationally. These buildings include the town hall, parish meeting hall, Villa Väinölä and the youth association hall, which was the architect’s first design assignment. The route also introduces you to another well-known artist with roots in the area, Eero Nelimarkka. The Nelimarkka Museum, which is also the Regional Art Museum of South Ostrobothnia, is located on the shores of Alajärvi.
